So what is the inner path? What makes them special and pious? The inward path is about personal transformation, changing who you are and who you can be. This is the essence of the message of the Prophet. He came to change hearts, he didn’t come to change legal systems per se, change eating habits, modes of dress, none of these things were emphasized. But it is the inner meanings that are important, the spiritual path, and the inner realities. And some of the later ulama described this they said our path is the path of three things “shariah, tariqah and haqiqah.”
Shariah: outward observance. System of laws – pray, zakat, hajj etc. Stay away from prohibited things.
Tarqiah: following that path, implementing in life. Doing, maintaining, observing in best manner as possibly can.
Main objective is haqiqah: the reality, the true inner reality. There are many things we accept due to faith, we accept them out of adab, etiquette. We know that everything comes our way is because of Allah’s decree is ultimately better for us even though we struggle within ourselves dealing with it, we come to terms and accept and live with it, and try to understand wisdom behind it. That’s a way. But the higher way is to actually see it, to see the wisdom in it. To have an unveiling, Allah gives u a glimpse of why things are the way they are. Its not about just accepting it, you actually see it, it becomes reality, haqiqah.
