With regards to Tasawwuf, some Sufis say that when you meditate and you go deep into remembrance of Allah SWT, a lot of mystical things can happen like flying, or levitating, or going to planets spiritually. Can you elaborate on this?

Anaswer: Alhamdulillah, at-Tasawwuf is not to get to that. It’s not for the flight, or to get all these things. Tasawwuf is you submit yourself to Allah, all the way of tasawwuf is to submit to Allah. But, if you submit yourself to Allah, Allah give you whatever He wants to give you, because if Allah be with you, Allah be with you with His power. And power with Allah can do everything. But you don’t go into tasawwuf because you want to get karamah, but every Muslim, truthful Muslim, can get karamah. You see that in the hadith, you see in the Quran, many people that Allah mention that they have various Karamah. In hadith Prophet SAW mentioned three people who are in a cave and a big rock came and they don’t have a way to get out. What did they do to go out? They don’t have power to do it. But what they did is Karamah, because every one of them he made tawassul with the good deeds he has done. One of them he said he has his father, and he used to bring the milk to his father all night and give the father, after that he give his children. And one night, he came and the father was sleeping. And he kept waiting for him until Fajr time and give him the milk. And he said, “O Allah, if I do that because of You, help me and open for me.” And Allah opened for him his part. The other guy, he said, he loves one woman and ask her to sleep with her, he ready to pay her money. The lady said no, that is haraam. So when the lady get hard time, she come back to the guy and ask him, “Ok, you give me the money and I sleep with you.” So he give her the money. So when he was about to sleep with her, the lady said, “Fear Allah!” And he feared Allah and leave her. And that guys said, “O Allah if I do that because of You, help me and open for me.” And Allah opened for him. The other one, somebody working with him. End of the month he have to pay him, he didn’t see him. And he put that money¬† in farm, and after that it grow, and he sell that and buy cow for him, after that he produced a lot of cows. The guy one day he passed that area, and come to him and said, “I worked for you, you have to pay me.” “Go behind the house, all the cows for you.” The guy asked him how, and he explained to him. So that guy he said, he was among the three people, he said, “O Allah if I do that because of You, help me and open for me.” And the rock was opened and they go out. That is one of the karamah of the awliya’ and if you see the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. If you follow Allah, Allah answer your prayer. But it’s not just for flying … if you have that, but that is ..not for tasawwuf, because Imam al-Shadili he said, “If you see somebody flying or somebody walking on water, but he don’t follow the shariah, make sure that it’s syaitaan, he is not amongst the sufi.”

So those who are sufi, that is not what they are looking for. But if you give yourself to Allah, Allah give you everything. You can do bigger than that. You know Maryam AS, she is not a prophet but Allah gave her fruit the time where nobody see fruit, that is karamah for her. So, whatever, and the ulama’ said, “Anything that is possible for a prophet to have, like a miracle – mu’jizat – is possible for a wali to have like karamah.” You know Sayyidina Umar in his time, when the Muslim, it was in Sham during the war, he was making khutbah and Allah showed him the army of Muslim … he said. He call … them. He was in Madinah al-Munawarrah and ..they were in Sham and ..they heard the voice of Umar, that is one of the karamah of the awliya’ because Umar is not a prophet, he is a wali and a companion of the Prophet SAW. But tasawwuf is not for that, tasawwuf is that to submit yourself to Allah.
