We seek refuge in the removal (of our gifts) after having received them.The Shaykh (Ibrāhīm Niāsse, may God be well-pleased with him) says, “Gnosis [maʿrifa] is a sacred wind which seizes the heart of the slave and pulls it into the Presence, so long as he remains in a state of toil (against the nafs, Shayṭān, whims and the world), and purifies from base characteristics it settles (in him). If not, then it flees from him and he returns to the darkness. He is just like someone who saw something in a dream that he likes and then wakes up (only having a recollection of the experience).”

Therefore one must struggle, and that work is to be steadfast in the obligations (of Sacred Law) until it leads them to refrain from the prohibited things. It is to be unwavering with regard to the passing of the Decree, until one is completely submissive to God (in all circumstances) and is absolutely pleased with him.

The spiritual aspirant must know that his faith is the capital of his wealth and there is no profit but with the capital of one’s wealth which is faith. It increases and decreases. In a (Prophetic) tradition [ḥadīth], (we read) that “no fornicator fornicates while he is a believer, nor drinks while he drinks a believer.” So, one must be completely cautious in disobeying the command of God; for to do so, as the Shaykh (Ibrāhīm Niāsse, may God have mercy on his soul) says, “Disobedience is the most conclusive evidence of distance from God.” With that being said, the door of repentance is open, and God says:

Verily, God loves those who repent and those purify (themselves). | Qur’ān 2:222

And God the Tremendous has spoken the truth. Wa’s-salām.
